Professional Recognition

To help you make an informed decision, our directory distinguishes between three levels of professional recognition allowing you to join a Professional Association:

Formal Accreditation

The course undergoes ongoing auditing and holds the official stamp of approval from an independent Professional Association.

Graduate Eligibility

The course is not formally audited by the association, but its graduates are pre-approved to join their professional register.

Mapping Route

Graduates can apply for membership by mapping their training and experience onto a Core Curriculum. This often requires the submission of an individual portfolio and case studies.

Note: The Herbal Alliance is designed to be an open and supportive hub between the  profession and the public. This page features most of the primary WHM training programmes in Ireland. Not all available schools may be listed as some schools may be new or may have chosen not to be listed. We recommend visiting the Professional Association websites to view their full registers of accredited courses and available pathways for membership.

Traditional Chinese Medicine Schools

In the UK and Ireland, professional training in Chinese Herbal Medicine (CHM) is typically structured as a postgraduate progression. The majority of these diploma and master's programmes require students to already hold a recognised clinical qualification in Acupuncture prior to enrolment. These institutions often offer separate undergraduate acupuncture training to allow students to fulfil this prerequisite.

However, there are exceptions that broaden access. White Crane Academy (UK) offers a dedicated pathway for non-acupuncturists (who can instead complete their Foundation Course in Chinese Medicine), and Asanté Academy (UK) opens its PG Diploma to a wider range of healthcare professionals including massage practitioners, nurses, physiotherapists, osteopaths, and doctors, alongside acupuncturists.

Clinical Complementarity & Practical Mastery: The ethos of this training is to provide a professional postgraduate framework that allows acupuncturists to "speak the language" of herbal medicine as a vital material complement to their existing clinical skills.

It prioritises the practical handling of herbs, moving beyond theoretical study to ensure students are comfortable with identification, storage, and the physical preparation of tinctures, creams, and ointments. Teaching is led by high-level academic clinicians with extensive experience in both UK and Chinese university systems.

 Prerequisites & Special Offerings

  • Standard Entry: Requires a Practitioner Diploma or Licentiate in Chinese Acupuncture.
  • Student Entry: The course is also open to second- and third-year Traditional Chinese Medicine students.
  • International Route: Offers an optional intensive hospital clinical rotation at Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine (NJUCM) in China.
  • Learning Blend: Utilises a multimedia blend of live interactive Zoom classes and in-person herb pharmacy workshops in Dublin.

Irish College of TCM

Chinese Medicine & Scholar-Practitioner Tradition: The curriculum presents Chinese Herbal Medicine as the modality most often relied upon in China to augment acupuncture. It is deeply rooted in the scholar-practitioner tradition (based on the work of Dr. Ted Kaptchuk and Mary Plunkett).

The school aims for true "practical mastery" through small-group seminars and hands-on prescription preparation, where students are trained to expertly modify classical prescriptions for individual patients rather than merely memorising individual herbs.

 Prerequisites & Special Offerings

  • Professional Status: This is a postgraduate programme specifically for professional Acupuncture practitioners or other TCM professionals.
  • Professional Eligibility: Graduates are eligible for membership in the Professional Register of Chinese Herbal Medicine (PRCHM) in Ireland and the RCHM in the UK.
  • Professional Schedule: Designed for working professionals, requiring attendance in Dublin only once every three months.

Asanté Academy (ATCM Diploma)

Clinical Immersion & Dispensary Mastery: Taught by Asanté Academy director, Professor Song Xuan Ke, and a number of highly qualified and experienced TCM teachers/practitioners. Taught directly within Asanté's main working clinic in Highgate, students are in the advantageous position of shadowing tutors as they see genuine patient cases day-to-day.

The curriculum offers a complete education in advanced TCM theory, Chinese herbs, formulary, and real-time clinical application. Students also learn practical dispensary skills, utilising Asanté's complete working herbal dispensary.

 Prerequisites & Special Offerings

  • Professional Background: The PG Dip course runs between 12 and 18 months. It is suitable for existing acupuncture and massage practitioners, along with other health professionals including doctors, nurses, physiotherapists, osteopaths, and chiropractors.
  • Graduates are eligible to join the ATCM and apply for the relevant insurance to practise Chinese herbal medicine.

Asanté Academy (MSc/PhD)

Pioneering Higher Education in TCM: Delivered in cooperation with Guangzhou University of Chinese Medicine (GZUCM), this 3-year programme bridges Eastern and Western higher education models.

The course aims to push the boundaries of medical thinking, improving the standard of TCM clinical treatment, scientific research, and rational exploration outside of China.

 Prerequisites & Special Offerings

  • Requires a Bachelor's/Master's degree (or equivalent). PhD applicants require 6 years post-bachelor's experience. Open to non-Chinese citizens only.
  • Students observe patients and collect research data under supervision within NHS hospitals across London.
  • Includes a short period of study in China, with the final degree awarded by GZUCM.

Manchester Academy of TCM

Authentic Tradition & Specialist Expertise: Dedicated to the preservation and teaching of "authentic Traditional Chinese Medicine" to the next generation of practitioners. The teaching ethos blends deep classical knowledge, mentored by qualified doctors and TCM masters with university-level experience, with modern clinical application.

The programme focuses on high teaching standards within a purpose-built clinic environment, designed to equip practitioners with the skills needed to treat a wide array of complex internal conditions, including auto-immune, cardiovascular, and skin disorders.

 Prerequisites & Special Offerings

  • Standard Entry: Requires a recognised acupuncture qualification (UG degree, PG diploma, or equivalent) and knowledge of the "8 Principles" of TCM diagnosis.
  • Language Proficiency: Minimum English proficiency of IELTS 6.5 is required if English is not the first language.
  • Clinical Flexibility: Provides over 400 hours of clinical study, with the option to complete 100 hours at a satellite clinic of the student's choice.

Northern College of Acupuncture

Integrative Research & Clinical Finesse: The NCA approach is built on an integrated curriculum where herbs, formulae, and the conditions they treat are learned simultaneously from the outset to build immediate clinical logic. The ethos focuses on developing "reflective practitioners" and autonomous lifelong learners who possess the professional curiosity to conduct research that underpins evidence-based practice.

There is a strong emphasis on integrating plant science, pharmacology, and pharmacognosy with traditional philosophical frameworks, training students to debate and evaluate different medical paradigms. The college aims to produce graduates who can work confidently with complexity and gaps in the knowledge base, ultimately creating "elegant" and individualised herbal treatment strategies.

 Prerequisites & Special Offerings

  • Standard Entry: Designed for qualified acupuncture practitioners with degree-level experience (BSc, Dip Ac, or LicAc) and registration with a relevant professional body.
  • Non-Standard Entry: Assesses Tuina and Shiatsu practitioners or doctors with advanced TCM knowledge on a case-by-case basis.
  • Language Proficiency: Minimum English proficiency of IELTS 6.5 or equivalent is required.
  • Advanced Awards: Offers both a Postgraduate Diploma (2 years) and a full Master of Science (3 years) validated by Health Sciences University.

School of Classical Chinese Herbalism

Jing Fang Lineage & Nature Resonance: Focuses exclusively on the "Jing Fang" system, a highly structured method of diagnosis based on the Shang Han Za Bing Lun that serves as an "arrow" to guide students through the vast ocean of herbal medicine.

The ethos centres on observing real patients to see how "Six Syndrome Differentiation" and pattern diagnosis transform clinical outcomes. There is a profound commitment to connecting students with living plants and the natural world, facilitated through specialised modules at botanical gardens.

 Prerequisites & Special Offerings

  • Education Level: Requires a degree or equivalent in acupuncture, or for the applicant to be in their final year of study.
  • Specialised Training: Includes external modules at the Bristol Chinese Herb Garden for practical dispensary and plant identification skills.
  • Accreditation: Accredited by the EHTPA, providing eligibility for membership in the RCHM.

Phoenix Academy

Evidence-Based Classical Integration: This programme is specifically designed to blend classic Chinese medicine theory with modern application and rigorous standards. The teaching strategy is heavily practice-oriented, grounding ancient knowledge in the available evidence of clinical usage within the UK.

Students are taught by well-established experts with active publishing records, ensuring the curriculum reflects recent positive clinical findings in areas like gynaecology, oncology support, and dermatology. The ethos emphasises a transition from acupuncture-based diagnosis to a sophisticated understanding of Materia Medica and the "art of combination".

 Prerequisites & Special Offerings

  • Acupuncture Prerequisite: Requires completion of a bachelor's degree equivalent acupuncture course containing at least 400 clinical hours.
  • Accreditation: In collaboration with the Shanghai University of Traditional Chinese Medicine and has been successfully accredited by EHPTPA.
  • Curriculum: Includes specialised dispensary training and modern pharmaceutical studies, including herb-drug interactions.

White Crane Academy

The Yin-Yang Pairing of Herbs & Acupuncture: Views Chinese herbal medicine and acupuncture as a "Yin-Yang pairing," where herbs work at a material level to strengthen deficiencies and expel pathogens that acupuncture alone cannot always reach.

The ethos is to provide rigorous, clinically relevant training that creates a "deep connection" between the practitioner and the herbs they prescribe. It prioritises practical competence (constituting 80% of the final mark) and encourages students to network with professional herbalists during advanced workshops.

 Prerequisites & Special Offerings

  • Standard Entry: Designed for acupuncturists, Shiatsu practitioners, and medically qualified professionals with a working knowledge of TCM.
  • Foundation Pathway: For those without a Chinese medicine background, a one-year part-time CM Foundation Course is a required prerequisite.
  • Unique Workshops: Offers a series of advanced Year 3 workshops on topics like oncology support, autoimmune disease, and external applications.
